Character designs week 20-24/01/2014

Diary week 20/01/2014 - 24/01/2014

Character designs

My task, as part of the art team in this project, is to create and develop the characters.
I am part of a small team, consisting of myself, Dani Ward and Pete Cox.
The style of the game is pixel art, and we decided to go for 64bit. As reference, the best images in this style, were taken from Scott Pilgrim the game, with influences from Wreck it Ralph for the exaggeration of some of the body parts ( hands).

My initial concepts were created in traditional art (pencil and charcoal) and they look like this:

Fig 1
Fig 2

Fig 3
Fig 4

Fig 5

Out of all of these, the following 6 were chosen for further development.

Fig 6
Fig 7 - Johny Pixel

Fig 8 - Millie Bit
Fig 9

Fig 10 - Pixie
Fig 11 - Froggy

After a few talks into these 6, together with Ben Stevens, the head of the art department and at the same time, the creator of the game, we came to the conclusion that the main character will probably Johny Pixel (Fig 7). This will the only one that will be customisable for demo we are preparing.

So, taking it forward, I have done some refined sketches of the chosen characters.

By rescaling Johny Pixel to the required size, I have achieved a pixelated version of it, which is the main aim of the project. The style of the game will be pixel art.
